Community
As a requirement of The Fighting Pi, each student actively participates in at least 25 hours of collaboratively donated time with team community service and outreach activities. The team, as a whole, continually volunteers at the
Ronald McDonald House of Detroit,
and participates in
Macomb County's Adopt-A-Road and the
Macomb Orchard Trail Adopt-A-Trail cleanup programs.
Team members annually participate, in a Sock Puppet Marathon in coalition with the School Section 4-H Club, resulting in the creation of over 1,500 sock puppets. These items benefit children in third world countries by distracting them when receiving immunizations and are given to the child to keep afterward.
The team has also raised money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, held a used book and toy drive for a battered women's shelter, participated in events such as Toys for Tots, the American Cancer Society's
Relay for Life, and helped landscape for the Bluewater Habitat for Humanity.
Team 1718 has set a tradition of community outreach and service, and continues to search for additional areas in which to provide assistance to the community and promote the merits of FIRST.
