Mentors

The Fighting Pi would like to thank our mentors, who give up their time, sleep, and sometimes sanity, to guide and assist our team. Nothing that we do would be possible without the contributions of these exceptional adults. Whether it is teaching how to weld, editing documents, or just keeping us on task and in line, what they do is essential to Team 1718's mission of instructing students in engineering, technology, and ingenuity.

Craig Roys: Mr. Roys is the founder and head mentor of the team. He teaches physics at the academy and began his career in Holly, Michigan, where he learned about FIRST as a mentor for Team 27: Rush. His unrelenting optimism serves as a positive influence on the team during stressful times and demonstrates why he is the perfect leader for The Fighting Pi. He is the commander of the drive team, and spends most his time working with the robot, scouting, and team logistics.

Tom Line: Tom works at our build space, the Romeo Ford Engine Plant, as a manufacturing engineer. He began mentoring the team in 2007 and since then has led the Controls and Electrical Department. Before coming to The Fighting Pi he was a mentor for The Knight Riders, where he gained valuable FIRST experience. In addition to his programming expertise, Tom has been a great asset with community outreach, helping to mentor rookie teams and guiding our electrical team through our fourth successive year of Labview Beta testing and presentations.

Mike Mroz: Mr. Mroz has been involved with the team since his daughter joined in 2009, helping to coordinate food at competitions and several events. He took the next step and officially became a mentor this season. Mr. Mroz is the website group mentor and has been a great help in many of the team's business operations. He works for Miljoco Corporation as a Systems and Marketing Manager, loves sports, and is a huge history buff.

Andrea Mroz: Mrs. Mroz, like her husband Mike, has been a parent volunteer since 2009, organizing meals at team meetings and providing important leadership on fundraising efforts. She became a mentor this season, and has taken on guidance of the fundraising group. She has also been involved with other business operations of the team, including revisions to the bylaws. She also owns A & M Marketing LLC.

Craig Tobey: Mr. Tobey has been a mentor since 2006, and leads the Mechanical Department. He guides the students as they design and build the robot, and is also in charge of teaching how to weld. Three of Mr. Tobey's children have been or are on The Fighting Pi and he is married to fellow mentor, Judy Tobey. Previously a helicopter jet engine mechanic and crew chief in the US Marine Corps, he now works at Armada Rubber Company as the Operations Manager.

Judy Tobey: Known affectionately as the "Team Mom", Mrs. Tobey has been mentoring since our rookie year of 2006. She is especially involved with the business functions of the team, and is very skilled at getting students motivated to do their jobs. Mrs. Tobey works in the transcription department at Port Huron Hospital and serves on the Armada School Board. She has three children: one is a Fighting Pi alumnus and the other two are currently on the team.

Richard Wahl: Mr. Wahl is the Lead Business Mentor, guiding the team's fundraising, outreach, and awards functions. A mentor since 2006, he has led in team functions as diverse as scouting and editing the weekly newsletter. He served in the US Air Force where he flew fighter jets, was a flight instructor, and achieved the rank of Major. After his career in the military he worked as a college-prep math instructor at Armada High School and then the Macomb Academy of Arts and Sciences. Now retired, Mr. Wahl devotes most of his time to his model train club, bee-keeping, and The Fighting Pi.

John Antilla: Mr. Antilla has been a mentor since 2007, when his children joined the team. He became a more part-time mentor in 2008 so that he could found our daughter team, Team 2604: Metal and Soul, at Capac High School. Mr. Antilla now serves as the head mentor of Metal and Soul in addition to his work with The Fighting Pi, and his relationship with both teams has allowed us to work closely together on a variety of projects. Mr. Antilla works at Chrysler as an operations manager.
