Team 1718 is organized into functional teams; Mechanical, Controls, and Business. There are also three groups that do not fall directly under one of the three main groups: Game Field, Drive Team and CAD. Each department is headed by a Lead Mentor and a student Team Captain.

Team Captains are voted on by the student members of the team and signed off by the mentors. All students running for the position of captain are nominated by the members at the June Awards Banquet and voted into their positions at the first team meeting in October. There are only three team captains; and their job is to preside over others in their department by delegating tasks, communicating with mentors, maintaining good morale and reporting poor performance.
